Portia as in the character in the merchant of Venice is a rich , beautiful and intelligent heiress of Belmont. Portia has been depicted as an obedient daughter who obeys to the will of her dead father as for the lottery of caskets devised by her father to choose a husband. she was a gracious lady and of her beauty we need no convincing as has already been said by bassanio that Portia was fairer than the word fair itself. she was also a lady with great etiquette and manner. although she did not like the prince of Morocco or the prince of Arragon she politely speaks to them and leads them to the casket. she has also been portrayed as a playful lady by her views and feelings for the six different suitors that had come in order to woe her. although she was an uneducated and unpracticed lady she had all the manners of a perfect woman. she also knew her boundaries and hence deters from announcing her love for bassanio in front of everyone. she also keeps her promise to her father of not telling anyone about the secret of the casket.
