The word 'sonnet' comes from the Italian word 'sonetto' which means 'little song'. A sonnet is a fourteen line poem composed in iambic pentameter with a specific rhyme scheme. A Petrarchan sonnet consists of an octave and a sestet, eight lines following the rhyme scheme abba abba and then the sestet with the rhyme scheme cdecde with the turn in the poem taking place in the ninth line or the volta. The other prevalent form is the Shakespearean sonnet which has three quatrains followed by a rhyming couplet. This is also known as the English sonnet. The sonnet in question follows the characteristics that are expected for the Shakespearean sonnet, three quatrains and a rhyming couplet and the final turn occurring in the final line.
