The pieces of ink or lead stick to the paper because of friction and get locked into its irregularities. The ink/lead would not adhere to the paper if there was no friction between the paper and the pen or pencil, and we would not be able to write.

If there was no frictional force, then it would quickly slip and we couldn't write.
