The blue colour solution is:
- Copper sulphate solution (in aqueous state). It is also known as blue vitrol.
What happens in this reaction?
- The above reaction shows the displacement reaction where a more reactive metal displaces a lower reactive metal from its salt solution.
- Iron is more active than copper. Hence it displaces copper from copper sulphate and forms ferrous sulphate.
- The colour of the solution changes due to the formation of ferrous sulphate which is green. And the displaced copper accumulates on the iron nail giving it a reddish brown appearance.
- This is a slow reaction. If we put a setup of the above and wait till hours, we can see the above result
