The shape and size of cells is largely influenced by their function. This determines how they perform and function:
Here are some of the examples of cells that have adapted or specialized in terms of shape and size:
1)Sperm cells- have a fish like shape coupled up with a tail that enables the cell to swim through female reproductive system to the ovum.
2)Red blood cells- the loss of nucleus gives these cells a flattened disk cell that allows for an increased space available for oxygen. The red cells are also small in size also allow it to squeeze through the tiny lumen of the blood capillaries.
3)Nerve cells:Nerve cells have a shape that closely resemble the branches of a tree. This branching out of the nerve cells increases the level of there sensitivity as the area of interaction with the environment is increased. The branching also increasing the rate and speed at which information is processed by the nerve cells.
4)Adipocytes: these fat cells are very tiny and look like airbags. This shape and size help the adipocytes to pack fat droplets in them.
5)Epethelial cells: epithelial cells can acquire any of this three shapes depending on their location and function of the site; squamous, cuboidal or columnar. The basic function in regards to shape are as follows; squamous-forms lining, cuboidal-secretory functions while columnar- majorly for absorption.
