In the year 2016, Karnataka received rainfall 33% below normal near the main catchment area of Cauvery river. This means the four reservoirs in Cauvery basin- Krishna Raja Sagar, Kabini, Hemavathi and Harangi- have together received only 114.66 thousand million cubic of water which is about half than normal. This has created a water deficiency in Karnataka.

Now the government of Tamil Nadu, in an effort to protect the interests of farmers, moved to Supreme Court in August 2016 complaining that Karnataka has failed to adhere to the water release plan as per normal monsoon season as suggested by Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal on Feb 5, 2007.

The Supreme Court directed Tamil Nadu Government to approach the Supervisory Committee meant to adjudicate the dispute of sharing Cauvery water. However, it also passed an interim order to release about 12 thousand million cubic of water per day for 10 days to give some relief to farmers, especially those who are growing paddy.

Now, this matter is at the discretion of Supervisory Committee and its panel of experts to assess the ground realities in these two states.
