childhood summers conjure memories of camp, the beach, fireflies, neighborhood games of kick the can or tag, sunburn and freedom.
Workbooks, journal writing, and math class? Not so much.
“I still think of summer as summer break,” says Siiri Põldmäe, a Baltimore mother of two kids, ages 11 and 15. “They can do whatever they want. They like to read so they’ll read anyway.”
But incorporating academics into the summer routine is increasingly common, as families try to prevent the so-called summer slide, when kids lack sufficient stimulation and “lose” their school-year learning, putting them at a disadvantage come September.
Even First Lady Michelle Obama is on the case.
“Summer shouldn’t just be a vacation,” she said in a video to families for National Summer Learning Day last week. “Instead it should be a time to get ahead, to branch out and learn new skills, to have new experiences like acting in a play, or doing some outdoor learning. And for anyone who’s fallen behind, it’s a time to catch up on lessons they missed.”
