A coalition government occurs when two or more political parties enter into a formal agreement to cooperate with a view to achieving a majority in parliament and, on that basis, form a government.
Universal suffrage gives the right to vote to all adult citizens, regardless of wealth, income, gender, social status, race, ethnicity, political stance, or any other restriction, subject only to relatively minor exceptions.
Apart from general elections and by-elections, midterm election refers to a type of election where the people can elect their representatives and other subnational officeholders in the middle of the term of the executive.
Members of Lok Sabha or the lower house of India's Parliament are elected by being voted upon by all adult citizens of India, from a set of candidates who stand in their respective constituencies. Elections take place once in 5 years to elect 545 members for the Lok Sabha.
A coalition government is a form of government in which political parties cooperate to form a government. The usual reason for such an arrangement is that no single party has achieved an absolute majority after an election. A coalition government might also be created in a time of national difficulty or crisis (for example, during wartime or economic crisis) to, give a government the high degree of perceived political legitimacy or collective identity, it can also play a role in diminishing internal political strife.
Political Parties performed various functions. Some of them are :
(i) Parties contest elections.
(ii)Parties put forward different policies and programmes and voters choose from them.
(iii) Parties play a decisive role in making laws for a country.
(iv)Parties form and run goverments.
(v)Those parties that lose in the elections plays the role of opposition to the parties in power.
(vi)Parties shape public opinon.
(vii)Parties provide people access to goverment machinery and welfare schemes implemented by the goverments.
The Opposition's main role is to question the government of the day and hold them accountable to the public. This also helps to fix the mistakes of the Ruling Party. The Opposition is equally responsible in upholding the best interests of the people of the country.
