Answer:

35 birds 17 cars

Step-by-step explanation:

x+y = 52 ----a

2x+4y= 138

x+2y= 69 ----b

using a and b

52-y+2y=69

y=17

put y's value in a

x=35

Given:

  • Total number of pets = 52
  • Total number of legs= 138

Need to Find:

  • The number of cats and birds?

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

\huge{\underline{\underline{\red{SOLUTION:-}}}}

Let the number of cats be = x

The number of birds = y

Now according to the question,

Total number of birds and cats = 52

\pink{\boxed{\boxed{=>x+y=\:52}}}

or we can say,

2x+2y=104---i (multiplying both side by 2)

━━━━━━━━━━━━━

One cat has 4legs

thus

The total number of legs that the x cats can have

= 4×x

\green{\boxed{\bold{=4x}}}

One bird has 2legs

thus

y birds will have

=2× y legs

\green{\boxed{\bold{=2y}}}

Total number of legs is given as 138

thus

\pink{\boxed{\boxed{4x+2y=138----ii}}}

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

subtracting i from ii we get,

4x+2y-(2x+2y)= 138 - 104

=> 4x+2y-2x-2y = 34

=> 2x=34

=> x= 17

now from i,

2x+2y= 104

=> x+y= 52

=> 17+y=52

=> y= 35

\red{\boxed{\boxed{Number\:of\:Cats=\:17}}}

\red{\boxed{\boxed{Number\:of\:Birds=\:35}}}
