Calculation of number of Mangoes

Answer: Initial total number of mangoes with Shazia was approximately  1471.

Explanation:

given that from total number of mangoes , 14% are bad.

Out of the remaining good mangoes she gives 80% to charity.

then in the end she has left with 253 mangoes.

Need to calculate initial total number of mangoes

let assume initial total number of mangoes be represented by variable y

As 14% are bad , so remaining good mangoes = initial total number of mangoes  - 14% of  initial total number of mangoes

=> Remaining good mangoes = y - 14% of y = y - 14y/100 = (100y - 14y)/100

=> Remaining good mangoes = 86y/100

80% of Remaining good mangoes is donated to charity.

so number of mangoes left after charity = Remaining good mangoes - 80% of  Remaining good mangoes = 86y/100 - 80% of 86y/100

=> number of mangoes left after charity = 86y/100 - (80/100) × (86y/100)

=> number of mangoes left after charity = 86y/100 ( 1 - (80/100)) = (86y/100 ) ( 20/100) = (86y/100 ) × 1/5 = 86y/500

but its given that number of mangoes left after charity = 253

=>  86y/500 = 253

on solving above expression for y we get

=> 86y = 253 × 500

=> y = (253 × 500)/86 = 1470.93≈ 1471

Hence initial total number of mangoes with Shazia = y = 1471.
