The grandmother was secluded because the author was given a room of his own. The common link of friendship between the grandmother and author was snapped. The grandmother almost stopped talking to anyone and used to sit by her spinning wheel from morning till evening and kept reciting prayers. She would only relax for sometime in the afternoon by sitting in the verandah and feeding the sparrows.
