crouched refers to lay closing knees near to face.

as usual refers to that action which happens always.

now coming to reason:-

In this poem the mother-in-law abuses are as usual on the woman. Actually the woman's right place is her kitchen. ahe always sir besides the stove by crouching. she has no right to go into any other room in the house until her husband or mother- in- law call her. Bearing all this situations she didn't dare to share her problems with her husband. she always bow her head down. This refers that she didn't have any right to speak.
