The reporting verb 'said to' is replaced by the word 'asked'.

If or whether is used to introduce the reported speech if the question begins with a helping verb, like am, is, are, was, were, has, have, does, do, did, shall, will, can, could, should, would, may, might or must.

The indirect speech is always in the assertive form so a full stop (.) is used at the end of the sentence.
