Indirect/Reported Speech refers to a dialogue being said to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.

Example: She said,"I am collecting names for the dance." (Direct)

                She said that she was collecting names for the dance. (Indirect)

In the above example, when writing in indirect/reported speech, the sentence changes according to its tense. If it is a question, 'said' will change to 'asked'. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'today' changes to 'that day', 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day', 'this' changes to 'that', 'can' changes to 'could' and many other words will have to be made. Punctuation marks other than a full stop (.) cannot be used in indirect/reported speech.

She said,"Will you be there on Sunday?" (Direct)

She asked if I would be there in Sunday. (Indirect)

\bold{Question :-}

She said , "Will you be there on Sunday ?"

\bold{Answer :-}

She asked whether I would be there on Sunday .

\bold{Rules\:to\:follow :-}

• Remove the commas both inverted and normal one in the Indirect speech .

• After removing commas , add 'asked/inquired' instead of the reporting verb in Interrogative sentences .

• In case of Yes/No Direct Interrogative sentences , add whether/if after the verb 'asked' to show that the answer would be Yes/No .

• Change the tenses accordingly to the reporting verb .

• Some modal auxiliaries change in Indirect speech . For example -
May - Might
Can - Could
Will - Would
Etc .
