Given :  Sheela can row upstream 80 km in 5 hours and downstream 104 km in 4 hours.

To find : The speed of the current

Solution:

Speed of boat in still water = x km/hr

Speed of the current = y km/hr

upstram speed = x - y km/hr

downstream  speed = x + y km/hr

Speed = Distance / time

=>  x - y = 80/5

=> x- y = 16

x + y = 104/4

=> x + y = 26

x- y = 16

x + y = 26

=> 2y = 10

=> y =5

The speed of the current  5 km/hr

Solution :-

Let us assume that, speed of boat is x km/h and speed of current is y km/h .

So,

→ Upstream speed = (x - y) km/h

→ Downstream speed = (x + y) km/h .

then,

→ Upstream speed = Distance / Speed

→ (x - y) = 80/5

→ x - y = 16 ------ Eqn.(1)

and,

→ Downstream speed = Distance / Speed

→ (x + y) = 104/4

→ x + y = 26 ------ Eqn.(2)

adding both Eqn we get,

→ x - y + x + y = 26 + 16

→ 2x = 42

→ x = 21 km/h

therefore,

→ 21 - y = 16

→ y = 21 - 16

y = 5 km / h (Ans.)

Hence, the speed of the current will be 5 km/h .
