Let the total no. of sweets with Shekar in the beginning be x.
  Sweets left with shekar = 7
   sweets he gave to raji = 5
    sweets given to renu = quarter of his sweets = 1x/4 = x/4

7 + 5 + x/4 = x
12 + x/4  = x
x - x/4 = 12
4x - x / 4 = 12
3x/4 = 12
x = 12 * 4 / 3
x = 48 / 3
x = 16

Therefore , Shekar had total 16 sweets in the beginning.
