During his short reign from 1540 to 1545, Sher Shah Suri instituted a number of important reforms.

1. He set up a new civil and military administrative system that was followed later by the greatest Mughal emperor, Akbar. He systematised the procedure for collecting land revenue from peasants by basing it on the area and productivity of the cultivated plot.

2. He introduced a new silver based currency called the Rupiya and standardized the weight and composition of the currency. Sher Shah's currency is the forerunner of the Rupee currency of modern India.

3. He repaired and extended the ancient Grand Trunk Road and extended it from Chittagong in Bengal to Kabul in Afghanistan.

4. He revived the historical city of Pataliputra as Patna which had been in decline since the 7th century.
