Given:

Shikha and Nithya start from the same point. Shikha walks 3 km in the West direction, then turn right and walks for 3 km. Nithya walks 3 km in the North direction and turns right and walks for 3 km.

To Find:

Find the distance between Shikha and Nithya now.

Solution:

Let the initial coordinates of Shikha and Nithya be (0,0), now

For Shikha, she moves 3km in the west direction that means she moved -3 in the x-axis, now her coordinates will be (-3,0), then she turns right and walks 3km that means she moved +3 in the y-axis, now her final coordinate is (-3,3).

For Nithya, she walks 3km in the north direction that means she moved +3 in the y-axis, now her coordinates are (0,3), then she turns right and moves 3km that means she moved +3 in the x-axis, now her final coordinates are (3,3).

So the distance between them can be calculated by using the distance formula,

d=\sqrt{(x_{1}-x_{2})^2+(y_{1}-y_{2})^2}

Now put the coordinates value in this formula, we have,

d=\sqrt{6^2+0^2} \\=6km

Hence, the distance between Shikha and Nithya is 6km.
