Let us consider that the required number be ‘y’. Then subtract 5 from 3y = 3y – 5.

=> 3y – 5 = 16

Add 5 to both sides, we get = 3y – 5 + 5 = 16 + 5

=> 3y = 21

Divide both sides by three, we get

3y3 = 213

y =7

Therefore, the required no. is 7.
