Given,

Ship A streams down north at a speed of 8 kmph and ship B due west at speed of 6 kmph.

To Find,

The velocity of A w.r.t B.

Solution,

The velocity of A w.r.t B will be

Vab = √(Va²+Vb²-2Va*Vbcos90°)

Vab = √(8²+6²+0)     { cos 90° = 0 }

Vab = √100

Vab = 10 kmph

Now, the direction of the velocity will be

θ = tan⁻¹(Va/Vb)

θ = tan⁻¹(8/6) north of east.

Hence, the velocity of A w.r.t B will be 10 kmph in the direction tan⁻¹(8/6) north of east.
