Ship Building had a great and proud history in India, well before the British arrived. During the Indus Valley Civilization (modern-day Pakistan), the locals built large ships to carry out trade with far away cultures and the region became prosperous.
When the British came to India, Bombay became a major port where ships were built. So good were these ships that many were commissioned for use in the British Royal Navy.
However, the British formally banned ship building in in the early years of the 18th Century, along with many other products from India were banned from Import in the UK, for fear of destroying local business people.
