It is true that Shivaji selected the fort of Torana to lay the foundation of Swaraj because of the following reasons:

• Forts carried a great significance at that time. People used to take shelter in the defense of the enemy. A fort gave strategic strength to the ruler and it was assumed that one who controlled the fort can control the territory as well.      
• He captured other forts along with Torana like the forts of Murumbdev (Rajgad), Torna, Kondhana, and Purandar for the Swaraj foundation in 1646.
• He had a strong belief in the goddess Toranjai.
• Torana was a strong fort that was neglected by Adilshah.
• Shivaji was well aware of the fact that there were not enough troops and ammunition on Torana fort.
