According to the Question

x + 5 = one by third of his mother's age

x + 5 = $\frac{1}{3} \times 6x$

x + 5 = $\frac{6x}{3}$

3(x + 5) = 6x

3x + 15 = 6x

15 = 6x - 3x

15 = 3x

x = $\frac{\cancel{15}}{\cancel{3}}$
