Shola is the local name for patches of stunted tropical montane forests which are found in valleys amid the rolling grasslands in the higher montane regions of South India. The patches of shola forest are separated from one another by undulating montane grasslands. The grasslands and shola together form the shola-grassland complex or mosaic. Probably the word is derived from the Tamil language word colai which means grove.
