Ans.1) A freely suspended magnet always rests in the north-south direction because the magnetic south pole of the earth lies in the geographic north direction and the magnetic north pole of the earth lies in the geographical south direction.

Ans.2) Magnetic compass is device which is used to locate the direction of a place.It always rests in North-South direction.

It is used in the navigators in ships, submarines, aeroplanes etc.

Ans.3) The magnetic field is the area around a magnet in which the effect of magnetism is felt. It is the region around a magnetic material or a moving electric charge within which the force of magnetism acts.

The strength of the magnetic field produced by a current carrying conductor depends on the following factors:

(i) Number of turns in the solenoid: The larger the number of turns in the solenoid, stronger is the magnetic field produced.

(ii) Strength of the current: Greater the current passed through the solenoid, stronger is the magnetic field produced.

(iii) Nature of the core material: By winding the coil over a soft iron cylinder, called core, the magnetic field can be increased several thousands times.

Ans.4) No, all conductors are not made of magnetic materials. By magnetic materials we understand ferromagnetic substances. For example best used conductors like Silver, Copper and Aluminium are not ferromagnetic. So, all conductors are not magnetic.
