According to the Hindu Mythology Krishna River is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu as a result of a curse on the trimurtis by Savitri ( another name of saraswati). Krishna River is one of the sacred rivers of India like Ganga River and Yamuna River. This river is named upon Lord Krishna. As per puranas, a ritual dip in this river can purify all the past sins and impurities of human being.
Krishna River rises at Mahabaleswar in district Satara, Maharashtra in the west and meets the Bay of Bengal at Hamasaladeevi in Andhra Pradesh, on the east coast. It flows through Maharastra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The delta of this river is one of the most fertile regions in India and was the home to ancient Satavahana and Ikshvaku Dynasty kings. Vijayawada is the largest city on the River Krishna.
The River Krishna, meaning "dark" in Sanskrit. Its full name is 'Krishnaveni'. Its tributaries Venna and Koyna are said to be Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma .
The river flows quickly, causing much erosion in June and August. During this time, Krishna takes fertile soil from Maharashtra, Karnataka and western Andhra Pradesh towards the delta region. The river has a number of tributaries but Tungabhadra is the principal tributary. Other tributaries include the Mallaprabha, Koyna, Bhima, Ghataprabha, Yerla, Warna, Dindi, Musi and Dudhganga.
Panchgani, a popular hill station just 17 km from Mahabaleswar. Behind Panchganga temple, there is a small road that leads to Krishnabai temple where the Krishna river is worshiped. The temple has a Shiva lingam and a beautiful statue of Krishna. A small stream of the river flowing from a cow-face (gomukh) falls on a 'Kunda' or water tank. This temple was built in 1888 by a ruler of Ratnagiri on the Konkancoast.
The important soil types found in the basin are black soils, red soils, Laterite and lateritic soils, alluvium, mixed soils, red and black soils and saline and alkaline soils.
This beautiful river Krishna has '' Pushkaralu'' - held from 12th – 23rd of August ,2016. In Hindu festivals worshiping rivers once in twelve years along each river is called Pushkaram . We have 12 sacred rivers in India and all these twelve rivers are associated with a zodiac sign. The river for each year’s festival is based on which sign Jupiter is in at the time. For krishna river, this occassion lasts as long as Bruhaspati remains in the Kanya zodiac sign.
