Friction is a contact force that always opposes the motion.

Friction is of three types :

Static friction - When we apply force to an object but that object doesn't tend to move because the force is less than the friction, is known as static friction.

Sliding friction - When the force overcomes the friction, then the object starts to slide, this is known as sliding friction. Static friction changes to sliding friction.

Rolling friction - When we place rollers under an object so as to make the movement of that object easier, then it is known as rolling friction.

Static friction > Sliding friction > Rolling friction

Frictional force exerted by fluids (liquids and gases) on an object moving through fluids is known as drag.
