Democracy was adopted in india because of the oppression we faced in history by the britishers. The democracy which was prevalant in british india was just for the name sake. The constitution makers wanted that all the citizens should have voice in forming the government, therefore, the system of democracy was adopted.

The essence of our freedom struggle was the idealogy of freedom and equity, nationalists-democrats were aware about western-democracies and wanted to establish democracy in India as well.
Moreover, if the Indian nation did not adopt democracy, then India would have been divided into various self-governing regimes (India is a diverse country).
The Indian Nation was diverse, democracy helped to accomodate and recogonise it's regional diversity.
