1. India's climate is mostly monsoon and the factors which determine the climate are differences in the heating and cooling of the land. Water creates low pressure on the lands of India and the sea area has comparatively higher pressure.
The example of higher pressure area is the east of Madagascar which is around 20° south in the Indian Ocean and the intensity there affects the monsoon in India.
In summers there is a shift in the position of Tropical Convergence Zone which is over Ganga plain which is position 5° north this leads to monsoon trough.
2. Characteristics of monsoon: Indian climate is a monsoon type of climate. Monsoon climate is characterised by weather conditions that change from season to season. This type is mostly experienced in interior parts of the country rather than coastal areas. Duration varies from 100 to 120 days. The spectacular arrival of monsoon winds at the end of the summer season is called 'burst of monsoon'.
Effects: Without monsoons India would have been a desert. In India monsoon usually lasts from July to September. Ninety percent of rainfall in India is due to monsoon. It provides water for agriculture and domestic purposes.
