1. Though chemical fertilizers increase crop production; their overuse has hardened the soil, decreased fertility, strengthened pesticides, polluted air and water, and released greenhouse gases, thereby bringing hazards to human health and environment as well.

2. Components of soil:

The four major components of soil are shown:

inorganic minerals, organic matter, water, and air. The amount of each of the four major components of soil depends on the quantity of vegetation, soil compaction, and water present in the soil.

3. On a hot summer day, the vapour coming out of the soil reflects the sunlight and the air above the soil seems to shimmer.

4. (i) Soil is the most important natural resource. It supports the growth of plants by holding the roots firmly.

(ii) It helps in supplying water and nutrients to plants. ... Soil is thus an inseparable part of our life.
