* A party that secures at least 6% of total votes in loksabha elections or assembly elections in 4 states and wins Atleast 4 seats in the loksabha is recognised as a National Party

* National parties will have influence

* examples = INC, BJP, BSP , CPI-M, CPI and NCP

state party or regional party

* A party that secures atleast 6% of the total votes in an election to the legislative assembly of a state and wins at least 2 seats is recognised as a State party or regional party

* Regional parties will have influence in 3 states

* examples - Samajwadi party, samta party, rashtriya janata dal, DMK. AIADMK
