Overloading can occur when the live wire and neutral wire come into direct contact. When the current in the circuit abruptly increases, this is called short circuiting.
Fuse is a device which prevent damage to appliances during overloading and short circuiting.
It works on the principle of joule's law of heating. The Joule heating that takes place in the fuse melts it to do break the electric circuit.
