The heroic Female – Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy:

Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy is one of the eminent personalities of India. Born in a middle-class family in Tamil Nadu during 1886, she rose to become the founder of one of the prestigious medical institutions in India, a great legislator and a social reformer. She fought against all odds throughout her life starting from her entry into a men’s college and to becoming the first and only female medical candidate in 1907.

She also became the first woman house surgeon at the government maternity hospital and later became a great practitioner of Medicine. She was greatly influenced by the principles of Mahatma Gandhi, Sarojini Naidu and Annie Besant and decided to serve women and children.

She associated with Women’s Indian Association and started the Avvai Home, a home that is still running, to serve the underprivileged children with free education, food, shelter, and clothing. She also endlessly worked to uplift the poor conditions of women belonging to minorities and Harijan communities, the devadasi women, and the Dalit women.

Being an able legislator, she introduced many bills regarding women and child welfare. In 1935, she started the Adyar Cancer Institute to serve the cancer patients and this is now one of the finest cancer hospitals in India. She has received many honors and awards including the Padma Bhushan from the Indian government for her relentless service to mankind and her exceptional service in the field of Medicine.
