At the age of 12 Babur was crowned the king of Ferghana as his father had died. Babur wanted to conquer Samarkand and when he did he got the news that his half-brother Jahangir was going to be given Ferghana to rule over. On his way back to Ferghana he lost Samarkand and Ferghana both. Then he was a ruler without a kingdom. He still had a few followers. He used to raid small villages in order to survive. Babur was a thoughtful person as "they were nearly all on foot, wearing peasant clothes armed with only staves. The party had only two tents between them. Babur;s own may still have been tolerably weather proof, but he reserved it for the use of his mother. For himself they pitched an open tent of felt under which he could hold court."(Quote from "The Great Moghuls") Shaibani Khan was Babur's number one enemy. Though Babur was not religiously fanatic as Shah Ismail had a condition if he wanted his help. The condition was that Babur would convert from a Sunni to a Shia and Babur agreed. So Babur became a Shia Muslim and conquered Samarkand again. But now the people there were appalled that Babur became a Shia and did not like the idea of that. He lost the support of the people of Samarkand and he lost Samarkand again after eight months.

Tired of losing Samarkand, Babur was invited by Babur was invited by Daulat Khan Lodi, a rebel of the Lodi dynasty, in 1524, to invade North India and fight the dynasty and their enemies in Rajputana.
