James Alfred Wight, OBE, FRCVS (3 October 1916 – 23 February 1995), known by the pen name James Herriot, was a British veterinary surgeon and writer who used his many years of experience as a veterinary surgeon to write a series of books consisting of stories about animals and their owners.

James Alfred 'Alf' Wight, known by the pen name James Herriot, was born on 3 October, 1916 in Sunderland, United Kingdom.

ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤBeing a noted veterinary surgeon and writer, who used his many years of experience as a veterinary surgeon to write a series of books, each consisting of stories about animals and their owners.

At the age of fifty, he began writing them down, publishing his first book at fifty-four. Although it sold only twelve hundred copies, he continued to write, compiling his first two books as ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ to be published in USA in 1972.

He began writing about his experiences with animals at the age of fifty, becoming one of Britain's most successful authors.
