British were going to arrest some of the leaders of Nationalist . So the people to protect the leaders from their arrests , they did a public meeting in an enclosed area called Jallianwala Bagh.
People were unknown from this fact that the British military commander, General Dyer had ordered not to do public meetings.
So, Dyer reached at the Bagh and ordered his troops to fire on peaceful gathering.
The firing was continued till no ammunition was left. About 400 people were killed and over 1000 were injured.
Gandhiji was horrified. he declared that to cooperate with 'satanic' government would be a 'sin'.
Hope this will help you!
