he was the second peshwA of maratha empire. he was the son of Balaji vishwanathan . he was appointed for the position of peswah.

In the eighteenth century, power passed into the hands of the peshwas ( the chief minister of a Maratha ruler).

Baji Rao 1 succeeded Balaji Vishwanath.

He conquered Malwa, Southern Gujarat and parts of Bundelkhand.

Towards the south, he defeated the Nizam of Hyderabad and got the right to collect taxes from some provinces of the Deccan.

He also captured Salsette and Bassein from the Portuguese.

He is known a the 'Fighting Peshwa' as he spent most of his life in fighting wars.
