A blood clot is a meshwork of platelets and blood cells woven together by fibrin. Accumulation of fibrin must be tightly regulated, of course, to prevent clot formation where there is no wound. Thrombosis is an abnormal localized activation of the clotting system.

(2) The process of clotting may be initiated by contact ot blood with any foreign surface (intrinsic process) or with damaged tissue (Extrinsic process).
3) Inrinsic and exrinsic processes involve interaction of various substances called clotting factors by a step wise or cascade mechanism.
(4) There are in all twelve clotting factors numbered as I to XII (factor V is not in active use).
