Khejarli is a place in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

First Chipko movement was held there in September 1731. In this village 363 Bishnois, led by Amrita Devi sacrificed their lives while protecting green Khejri trees considered sacred by the community, by hugging them.

Honouring the courage of the Bishnoi community, the ruler of Jodhpur, Maharaja Abhay Singh, apologized for the mistake committed by his officials and issued a royal decree, engraved on a copper plate ordering the following:

–All cutting of green trees and hunting of animals within the revenue boundaries of Bishnoi villages was strictly prohibited.
–It was also ordered that if by mistake any individual violated this order, he would be prosecuted by state and a severe penalty imposed.
–Even the members of ruling family did not shoot animals in or even near the Bishnoi’s Village.

Khejarli Mela is held on 10th of Bhadra month(August/September in the Gregorian calendar) every year.

:\pink\implies There is a Bishnoi community in Rajasthan state of India for whom conservation of forests and wildlife has been a religious belief. In 1731, A lady named Amrita Devi Bishnoi led a group of 363 persons who sacrificed their lives for the protection of khejri trees (pipal tree) in khejrali village near Jodhpur Rajasthan in India. This shows the determination of some people to work either they were rich or poor for the conservation of their natural environment. The Government of India has recently instituted an ‘Amrita Devi Bishnoi National Award for Wildlife Conservation and protection in India in the memory of Amrita Devi Bishnoi and it was given to those persons who protect the wildlife.
