Short note on Samrat Ashoka's life before and after transformation:

King Ashoka also known as Ashoka the Great, was an Indian king who ruled over the Maurya Dynasty of the Indian subcontinent from 268 BCE -232 BCE . The early part (before transformation) of Ashoka's rule was seemingly quite bloodthirsty, he became a devotee of the Lord Buddha and his teachings after his invasion of Kalinga which was on India’s east coast, the present-day states of North Coast of Andhra Pradesh and state of Orissa. Ashoka was considered as one of India's supreme emperors. He had extended Chandragupta's kingdom to rule over a dominion extending from current Afghanistan in the west to Bangladesh in the east.

It enclosed the whole subcontinent of India excepting for parts of current Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. In around 260 BCE, Ashoka waged a destructive battle against the Kalinga state, present day Odisha, which he eventually conquered. However, the deadly war with Kalinga changed the revengeful King Ashoka to a peaceful and stable emperor and he became a supporter of Buddhism.

Ashoka made Buddhism India’s state religion.  During his time, Buddhist monasteries were constructed, and missionary work was promoted. Following that, Buddhism began to widely spread in Indian and beyond. The philosophies and thoughts of Buddhists became diverse, with followers interpreting ideas in different ways.
