The control unit (CU) is a component of a computer's central processing unit (CPU) that directs the operation of the processor. It tells the computer's memory, arithmetic/logic unit and input and output devices how to respond to a program's instructions.[1]

It directs the operation of the other units by providing timing and control signals. Most computer resources are managed by the CU. It directs the flow of data between the CPU and the other devices. John von Neumann included the control unit as part of the von Neumann architecture.[2] In modern computer designs, the control unit is typically an internal part of the CPU with its overall role and operation unchanged since its introduction

Control unit co-ordinates the transfer of data betweenregisters of CPUor microprocessor andALU. Control unit serves the instructions forALU. Along with this, control unit, as its name implies, controls every other parts of themachine, their co-ordinations, traffic etc. Thus control unit controls thecomplete work-flow of the CPU. But control unit doesn't take inputs, give outputs, process data or store data itself, what control unit do is, it controls these operations when they are performed by respective devices. The purpose of control unit to run the whole computer. And control unit is ran by the instructions stored in RAM and ROM. So, control unit receives instructions which are stored in RAM and ROM and controls operations of other connected units or devices through those instructions.
