Vaccine (L. Vacca = Cow or Vaccinia = Cowpox) was actually developed by the British physician by Edward Jenner in 1796.

While treating a smallpox patient, he found that the milkmaids who had developed cowpox did not catch smallpox even during epidemics. He thought if some material from cowpox sores is injected into some healthy persons, they should also not develop smallpox. To his surprise, what he thought was right as persons inoculated with material trom cowpox sores became immune to smallpox.
