An endocrine gland is an internal gland that secretes hormones into the bloodstream directly. These hormones then exert their specific action on remote cell or receptor organs. Endocrine glands are found in most animals, including invertebrates.
Hormones act as sorts of biochemical messengers, regulating many of the body's functions such as growth and development, sexual differentiation, reproduction, metabolism, blood pressure, blood glucose and fluid balance.
Endocrine glandular epithelium may be in the form of:
1. Of well-defined endocrine glands (eg thyroid, pituitary gland, testes, ovaries ...)
2. Of clusters of endocrine cells (eg islets of Langerhans of the pancreas, Leading cells of the testes)
3. Dispersed, diffuse, within other organs (eg, endocrine cells in the digestive tract, such as stomach gastric cells, duodenal secretion cells, ).
