Cotton ,jute,hemp and natural silk are the four major fibre crop grown in India.

*Silk:it is obtained form cocoons of the silkworms fed on green leaves specially mulberry. Tearing of silk worms for the production of silk fibre is known as sericulture.

*Cotton:In India, cotton is mainly cultivated in the states of Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh. It is grown in black clayey soil with warm climate. When its plant starts flowering, they give flowers of yellowish-white color which turns red in color after few days. Processes involved in its cultivation.

Processes:

Ginning: The plant from which cotton is picked contains seeds. The process of removing these seeds from cotton pods is known as ginning. Ginning can be done using hands or by machines.

Spinning: The process of turning fiber into yarn is known as spinning.

Weaving: The process of making a fabric by arranging two sets of yarn together.

Knitting: Two yarns are used in knitting whereas in weaving more than two yarn can be used. This can be done by hand and also by machines. Example: Sweater is knitted from wool.

Uses of Cotton:

It is basically used for every type of clothing from jackets to normal shirts.

In home,it finds its use in bed sheets and curtains.

Its seed oil is used in food and cosmetics.

It is also used in coffee filters.

It’s seeds are fed to cattle and crushed to make oil,rubber and plastics.

*Jute:Jute is a long, soft, shiny fibre obtained for the vegetables.

Jute fibres have been an integral part of the culture of West Bengal, and some portions of Bangladesh. They are mainly composed of the cellulose and lignin. Thus it is also called as a lingo-cellulosic fibre. It is the most affordable natural fibres and has a variety of uses. It is used to make jute bags, sacks, coarse clothes, slippers, curtains, chairs, carpets, table, and floor mats, etc.
