Oceans are responsible for the existence of life in our world. Life started in the ocean, and today, more than 230,000 marine species call the sea their home.

Oceans control the Earth's climate and temperature. They balance heat and are crucial for the creation of rainfall.

On average, the five oceans of the world have a salinity of roughly 3.5 percent. However, regions like Mediterranean, the Atlantic, and the Bay of Bengal have higher salinity levels.

The largest ocean in the world - the Pacific Ocean - is ten times bigger than the smallest one - the Arctic Ocean. The Pacific Ocean got its name from Fernão de Magalhães, the Portuguese explorer who organized the first circumnavigation of the Earth.

In 1521, Magalhães - often called Magellan - called it "Mar Pacifico." The Pacific Ocean covers more than 30 percent of the surface of our planet, and it is bigger than the landmass of all continents.

Interestingly, the smallest ocean in the world - the Arctic Ocean - has 25 percent of the planet's undiscovered petroleum resources.

But do you know the name and the size of the world's oceans?

1. Pacific Ocean: 168,723,000 square kilometers

2. Atlantic Ocean: 85,133,000 square kilometers

3. Indian Ocean: 70,560,000 square kilometers

4. Southern Ocean: 21,960,000 square kilometers

5. Arctic Ocean: 15,558,000 square kilometers

We know that the surface of the Earth is 71% covered with water. The oceans take up 97% of the total amount of water present in the world.

There are five main oceans on our Earth and their names are the Arctic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Antarctic Ocean, and the Indian Ocean. These oceans are together known as the Five Bodies of Water.

Let us learn about the five oceans in the world separately:

The Arctic Ocean-

  • This is the smallest ocean on the planet.
  • It consists of undiscovered resources to petroleum, which accounts for 25% of the total petroleum resources in the world.
  • The size of this ocean is approximately 15,558,000 sq. kilometers.

The Pacific Ocean-

  • Behold the largest ocean on the planet!
  • The Pacific Ocean stretches over a huge area on the planet and thus evidently takes up about 30% of the total Earth's surface. It is also greater in size than the added sum of all the landmass of every continent in the world.
  • The size of this ocean is approximately 168,723,000 sq. kilometers.

The Indian Ocean-

  • It is the world's third largest ocean.
  • The Indian Ocean makes up about 19.8% of the total oceanic water of the Earth.
  • The ocean borders Asia in the north, Australia in the east, and Africa towards the west side.

The Atlantic Ocean-

  • This ocean is the largest just after the Pacific ocean.
  • The Atlantic Ocean spreads approximately over 20% of the world.
  • The size of this ocean is approximately 106,460,000 sq. kilometers.

Antarctic Ocean-

  • This ocean is also known as the Southern Ocean since it constitutes the world's southmost waters.
  • The Antarctic Ocean covers about one-sixteenth of the ocean water and consists of highly salty water.
