Har Gobind Khorana was an Indian American biochemist. While on the faculty of the University of Wisconsin, he shared the 1968 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Marshall W. Nirenberg and Robert .

Har Gobind khorana,(Born January9,1922) , Punjab , India - Died on November9,2011 , at Concord , Messachusetts , USA .

  • His early Life:

His father worked as the village "Patwari" or taxaton officer .

His family was poor but his father insisted on providing him a good education .

His family was in fact the only literate one in the whole village .

He earned a scholarship by the Government of India to study at the University of Liverpool.

He continued his post doctoral studies in Zurich.

  • His major works:

Har Gobind khorana was a world renowed biochemist famous for his work in the field of genetics and DNA. He was the first person to demonstrate the role of nucleotides in protein synthesis.

  • His Awards & Achievements:

In 1968 the Nobel prize in physiology or medicine was awarded jointly to Har Gobind Khorana,Robert W.Marshall W.Nirenberg "for their interpretation of the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis. The Khorana program was founded in his honour in 2007 by the University of Wisconsin-Madison .
