microorganism can be harmful to us in the following ways. 1) they can cause disease in human ,plants and animals. microorganisms that can cause disease in man , animals and plants are called pathogens or germs. diseases spread through air : communicable disease like common cold and tuberculosis can spread through droplet . when an infected person coughs or sneezes , the pathogens travel through air and reach the healthy person may cause infection. vector - borne disease : flies are common culprits that breed diseases. flies may sit on dirt and garbage when pathogens stick to their bodies. if food is left uncovered ,that flies carrying germs sit on it and contaminate it . consuming such contaminated food and water causes diseases. 2) they can spoil the food: many bacteria and fungi grow on food items and produce certain toxic substances. this makes food unfit for consumption.
