He was a mavala (soldier) of Shivaji Maharaj. When Shivaji Maharaj was to meet Afzal Khan, it was decided that both will bring only 10 people along with them. Jiva Mahale was one among those 10 people choosed by Shivaji Maharaj. Shivaji Maharaj killed Afzal when the latter tried to kill Shivaji Maharaj. Sayyad Banda then charged at Shivaji Maharaj and before he could reach Shivaji Maharaj, Jiva Mahale killed Banda and that's why it is said "Hota Jiva mhanun vachla Shiva"
