\textbf{\underline{Latitudes : }}

Latitudes are horizontal imaginary lines that run across the earth.

• A latitude is the angular distance measured from the centre of the earth to any given point on the Northern or Southern hemisphere.

• This distance is measured in degrees, minutes and seconds.

• The degree is indicated by (°).

• The distance between any degrees of latitude is 111 km.

\textbf{\underline{Characteristics of Latitude}}

• Latitudes run in an East - West direction.

• Parallels of latitude indicated North and South location of a place.

• There are 90 latitudes in the Northern hemisphere and 90 latitudes in the southern hemisphere.

• The letter 'N' and 'S' is used to indicate North and South latitudes respectively.

\textbf{\underline{Important Parallels of Latitude}}

\textbf{Equator} or 0° Latitude

\textbf{Tropic of Cancer} which is at an angular distance of 23½° N from the Equator.

\textbf{Tropic of Capricorn} which is at an angular distance of 23½° S from the Equator.

\textbf{Artic Circle}is at 66½° N from the Equation.

\textbf{Antarctic Circle} is at 66½° S from the Equator.

LATITUDES

latitude is a geographic coordinate that specifies the north–south position of a point on the Earth's surface. Latitude is an angle (defined below) which ranges from 0° at the Equator to 90° (North or South) at the poles. Lines of constant latitude, or parallels, run east–west as circles parallel to the equator. Latitude is used together with longitude to specify the precise location of features on the surface of the Earth. On its own, the term latitude should be taken to be the geodetic latitude as defined below. Briefly, geodetic latitude at a point is the angle formed by the vector perpendicular (or normal) to the ellipsoidal surface from that point, and the equatorial plane. Also defined are six auxiliary latitudes that are used in special applications
