Lord Dalhousie belonged to an aristocratic family of Scotland. Earlier he had served as the President of the Board of Trade. He is regarded as one of the greatest Governor-General of India.Lord Dalhousie arrived in India on January 2, 1848. As Governor-General of India, he supervised the whole administrative apparatus of the British East India Company. He introduced a policy known as the doctrine of lapse . Under his new doctrine, the British prohibited the adopted heirs to succeed their fathers and proceeded to annex the whole state.
